Ari had not been able to follow the twins to the banquet room, where a lack of places to hide made it impossible. He had instead turned to look for Jasmine, just in time to see her carried off the veranda across the street. He found it rather incredible that no one had sounded an alarm with local police.

From the shadows, he watched Herr Doktor’s henchmen carry off Jasmine into a darkened alleyway — away from any prying eyes — and load her into the trunk of the waiting limo. He stood seemingly emotionless except for the visible tightening of his jaw and the constant knuckle-popping clenching of his fist. It took a supreme effort to stay put and not run to rescue her. Momentarily, he stopped clenching his right hand and reached up to feel his short-distance blow pipe, secured in his inside coat pocket.

It would be so easy to finish off those lumbering beasts, messing with my girl, Ari thought to himself, his face reflecting his rage. But I’m sure not going to let them out of my sight, even if that’s not what we agreed with Burke.

The limo pulled around to the front of the building, and Ari slipped around front without being noticed to watch as Herr Doktor and his bankers were ushered out once more. The Raven was nowhere to be seen.

The limo in which Jasmine was imprisoned headed out of town on the Old Santa Fe Trail. Ari felt he had no time to waste and as quickly as possible, he rushed to his rental car parked in an alley across the street.

He slid into the driver’s seat and started the car, then pulled out his PDA with the tracking sensor Jasmine had placed under the fender of the limo beeping back strongly. He quickly took up pursuit.

The Old Santa Fe Trail in this part of town is barely wide enough for two horse-drawn carriages to pass, let alone two modern gas-guzzlers. Ari drove recklessly fast through the winding road toward Old Pecos and Interstate 25. As the signal from the trace device beeped louder, he slowed his pursuit in order to remain unseen.

Suddenly, the complete silence inside Ari’s car was blown apart by a sound like the bells of Armageddon. The well-trained super-spy jumped in surprise and let out a little squeal. His phone was ringing with an unearthly tone he had never heard before and certainly had not programmed.

Ari picked it up almost afraid of who might be on the other end. “Hello?”

“Taking a drive, Ari?”

“What did you do to my phone, Tom?”

“Not the point, son. In 500 yards, you will see an Episcopal Church parking lot. Pull over and park; we need to talk. We need to stay on plan, Ari. She volunteered, remember?”

“But if they hurt her –”

“If they spot you following them, they will kill her. Pull over. We have an eye in the sky on the car you are following; we won’t lose it.”

Ari didn’t like it.
